What moves the number
Page count and service coverage. A site that needs a dedicated page per high-value service is a bigger build than a five-page brochure, and it is the difference between ranking for those services and not.
Booking. An enquiry form is cheap; a booking system integrated with your calendar or management software is not.
Whether local SEO foundations are built in or bolted on afterwards. Retrofitting structure, schema and location pages costs more than building them correctly first.
Content and photography. Real photographs of the business and team cost money and outperform stock.
The comparison that matters
Whatever your average job or customer is worth, the arithmetic is the same: a website that converts pays for itself in the customers it captures that a slow or unbookable one would have lost.
Against a typical build cost of €3,000–€5,000, most small businesses only need a handful of extra bookings a month to justify the spend — which is why website spend is judged against missed enquiries, not against 'a website' as an abstract cost.
What is usually missing at the cheap end
Only 29% of Irish enterprises accept online bookings at all (CSO, 2025), so a site without booking is normal — and it is where the after-hours enquiries go to whoever does have it.
Individual service pages. A single generic services page cannot rank for five different services, which caps what the site can ever produce.
Mobile performance. Deloitte and Google found a 0.1-second mobile improvement lifted conversion 8.4% across 37 brands.
Grants
Irish small businesses often ask about Local Enterprise Office funding. Be careful here: the Grow Digital Voucher funds software subscriptions and training, and its guidance states it does not support bespoke website development. The older Trading Online Voucher covered website work but has its own eligibility limits and depends on each office's budget.
Confirm current scheme rules with your own Local Enterprise Office before assuming any grant applies. Do not rely on an agency quoting you a net-of-grant price.
Questions
How long does a small business website take to build?
Typically 7 to 14 days for a custom build from first call to launch, depending on how much content is ready and how many revisions are needed.
Is a monthly retainer necessary?
Not for the website itself. It matters for ranking — a site that launches and is never touched slides down as competitors publish. If you are already dominant locally and happy with enquiry volume, a retainer is optional.
Do I own the website?
You should. Confirm before signing that the domain, content, site and Google Business Profile access transfer to you if you leave. Not every arrangement works this way.
