Should a small business take online bookings?

Online booking is worth adding, but not for the reason it is usually sold. Only 29% of Irish enterprises accept online bookings (CSO, 2025), while a large majority of appointments across service businesses are still made by phone. Online booking's real value is capturing the after-hours enquiries you currently lose entirely — not replacing the phone.

The honest case for it

Someone deciding at 9pm cannot ring you. If your site has no booking or enquiry path, that person either waits until morning — and often books with whoever they find next — or is lost.

That is the gap online booking fills. It is an out-of-hours capture mechanism, and the fact that only 29% of Irish businesses have one is exactly why it is still an advantage.

The case against overselling it

Agencies routinely pitch online booking as the replacement for reception. The data does not support that: most appointments across service businesses are still booked by phone, and phone enquiries convert far better — commonly cited at 25–40% against roughly 2% for form fills.

A site that hides the phone number behind a booking widget is optimising for the smaller, worse-converting channel. Both should be prominent, and on mobile the phone number should be a tap-to-call link.

What good looks like

Short. Every additional field costs completions; three-field forms convert best.

Fast on a phone, on a real mobile connection rather than office wifi.

Built with the data in mind — a booking form is personal data processing under GDPR, and some sectors collect special category data.

Confirmed. An automatic confirmation and a reminder reduce no-shows, which is often worth more than the extra bookings.

Questions

Will online booking reduce no-shows?

The booking itself does not; the automated confirmation and reminder that come with it usually do. That is often the larger financial benefit.

Does it need to integrate with my existing calendar or software?

Not necessarily. A request-based form that you confirm is far simpler, avoids double-booking risk, and captures most of the value. Full integration is a bigger build.

Is a booking form or a phone number better on mobile?

Both, with the phone number as a tap-to-call link. Most appointments still come by phone and those callers convert better, so hiding the number to push the form costs enquiries.
